An hour before Brent was supposed to pick Rebecca up for the dance, she called him and said she was too sick to go. That did not go over well. I held her hand as the cursing on the other end of the line got so loud she had to hold the phone at a distance just so it wouldn’t hurt her ear.

Our bags are packed, my old rusted car gassed up. Now all we have to do is work up the guts to really go. I keep thinking at any moment one of us will realize how crazy this plan is. “We’ll stay here at my house until everyone is at the dance. Then we’ll get in the car and go.”

Rebecca nods in agreement, though her eyes don’t look as convincing. “Are you sure we can do this? I mean we only have four hundred dollars between the two of us. We have no place to stay.”

“We’ll figure it out. Anything is better than staying here just waiting for Brent and his cronies to hurt you. I can get a job. We can sleep in the car for a little while if we really have to. We’ve got a few of your paintings in the trunk, someone will buy them, I know it.”

“Christmas is next week. It’ll be the first time I spend it away from my family, my brothers.” I hate to see her sad, but I remind myself how sad she’ll be if Brent gets his hands on her. “You’re such an optimist, Devin. How did you get like that?”

“I don’t know. I never used to be before I met you. There are a lot of things that are different now.” The honesty fills the room and I think it will create a bubble that will push us apart. Instead she moves toward me and slides her arms around me, tucking herself against me. I want to protect her. I never want anything to ever hurt her. It scares me how much I’d be willing to do to keep her safe.

We sit quietly, her nestled in my arms on my bed. It isn’t a lack of overwhelming desire that keeps me from making a move on her, the timing just isn’t right. It isn’t what she needs in this moment. Though I still can’t get our night together out of my head.

When we finally break our tangled bodies apart from one another we head for the door. I’m loading Rebecca’s duffle bag into the trunk of my shit-box car when I hear it. It’s the squeal of tires and rumble of a pickup truck engine rounding the corner up my street. I turn my head to see, but I already know it’s him.

“Get in the house,” I call to Rebecca, but she’s frozen in fear. Her eyes flutter with terror as she sees Brent’s red pickup roar into my driveway and block us in. He’s out of his truck. My mind flies through the reality.
